But First, Let’s Start With You

Foundation of any style is inner beauty

WAIT! Before you grab that lace bra and Tarte Shape Tape Concealer, you must start with a solid foundation. I’m talking about looking yourself in the mirror and say, “Good Morning Gorgeous, today is gonna be a sweet day!” Style begins with a strong YOU. Set your mind in a positive place. Whenever I decide to dress up, I always say, “Natonya own YOU because you got this!” If I don’t give myself positive affirmations, I never feel like I look good. As the saying goes, “when you feel good, you look good”.

Story time

I planned the perfect outfit for a Saturday afternoon but after I put on this super cute floral dress, I was disappointed. The dress didn’t fit the same when I first wore it. I quickly stripped off the dress and called myself ‘fat’.

I retired to my typical over-sized band tee and printed leggings with a long cardigan. While this outfit could’ve been extremely stylish, it meant nothing because my  confidence wasn’t the backdrop. Throughout that whole day, I wasn’t comfortable in my clothes, hiding the curves God gave me and wrapping myself in a blanket of insecurity.

For me, the best thing you can wear is a smile full of confidence.

Before you can look stylish, you must feel good about yourself. Style is all about letting inner beauty become the main focus and then your outfit begins to shine. No high-end label, trend, shape-wear will make you look irresistible, it’s all about your fruit. What is your spirit like?

Now that I developed my personal style, I get dress with confidence first. If my #ootd doesn’t look right, I don’t let it ruin my day, I change into something else with an even better attitude.

GOT IT! NOW, HOW DO I LOOK STYLISH?

Always remember to be YOU

Now that we cleared up the foundation of style, which is embracing who you are mentally and physically. Let me get to that juicy content you came for, how to look stylish!

When we walk out the door, we should look like ourselves and not someone else. Don’t be consumed with wearing the latest trends or paying for a $200 bag you only use once. Be vintage, thrifty, high-end, low-end, cheap, luxurious whatever it is, JUST. BE. YOU.

Style shouldn’t haunt you, it should flaunt you.

Below, I put together a list of easy fashionable ways to make a style statement. I wanted to prove you can look stylish without spending a ton of money. Basically taking items from your closet and pairing it in an unique way.

SERIOUSLY, EXPLAIN HOW I TURN THIS INTO #OOTD

Stuck in a rut? 10 Instant Style Tips

Style is all about taking what you have and making the most of it. Stress no more in putting together a stylish look, just add to what you’re wearing and become a standout by creating fresh perspectives on classic pieces.

1. Layers

Instead of wearing your patterned long-sleeve shirt with a coat, switch it up. Try wearing mixed prints and layers together. Add a plaid shirt AND a leather jacket for street-style appeal. Jughead or FP Jones anyone?

2. Fishnet Tights Under Ripped Jeans

Fishnets pay homage to the 90s grunge era and Madonna’s retro yet flamboyant stylish moments. With its debut in the 1920s, the netted tights popped eyes with feminine interest adding a subtle touch of sex appeal. Pairing tights with ripped jeans blends deconstruction and glam. Be sure to check out Jane’s post on how to wear colorful tights, it really gave me some new fashion ideas.

3. Fedoras

A tilted fedora gives you those Beyonce vibes, flattering and balancing your body shape by creating a feminine yet mysterious look to your outfit. Don’t fall into the box of thinking fedoras are only formal attire. Wear it with cargo pants, denim shorts or a solid bodycon dress.

4. Mixed Prints

Mixing patterns provide endless possibilities to displaying impeccable taste in nonchalant style. Animal, floral, stripes, polka dots and all printed pieces are neutrals; any plain color matches. Kick it up a notch with an unorthodox blend horizontal and vertical stripes.

5. Long Cardigan

This essential item is perfect year round, coming in various forms such as: lace or crochet for spring and summer, cashmere for autumn and wool for winter.

6. Statement Shoes

Pop any outdated look with a pair of floral/patent leather pumps, bow-top ballerina flats, or velvet booties. Allow your monochromatic look to pop with a patterned heel, mini floral dress with velvet booties or pair a pencil skirt with Converse.

7. Outerwear

Denim jackets add character and completely transform your outfit. My favorite contemporary denim styles include: denim on denim, denim and silk dresses, patchwork denim and denim with leather. For a style upgrade, pop on a blazer to turn any casual look from blah to sophisticated.

8. Graphic Tee

Whether it’s a one-word shirt, birth year, favorite show merch, band tee or Mickey Mouse; add a blazer with a pencil skirt and instantly take a plain tee from casual to eccentric.

9. Sunglasses

Immediately pull together an off-duty look with a pair of eye-catching sunnies. Sunglasses create an unpretentious and effortless style moment.

10. Over-sized Clothing

Play tricks with your silhouette and wear a cropped top with baggy/boyfriend jeans. Not in the mood to show off your midriff? Up a size or two in your sweatshirt and pair with your favorite skinny jeans/leggings/leather pants.

Love this! I always love your blog posts, the message I get from them is always so positive and I love it. I definitely need to work on more positive affirmations, I can be so negative on myself sometimes and I feel like I need to be more loving to myself! I love wearing long cardigans and oversized jumpers, I always feel so relaxed in them but I also think they look super cute!

I love the message here! You could be wearing the best outfit in the world but it won’t shine unless you’re owning it Figuring out how to make trends work/ fit with your personal style is a huge part of that too. My favourite from this list is 10! An oversized sweater or tee with some skinny jeans or leggings is a go-to when I’m not feeling great but want to look good x

This couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m thinking about updating my closet and I while I do have my own guidelines for looking luxe on a budget, I always like to see how others approach style. My personal style has evolved sooooo much in the past few years and while I’m still the queen of minimalism I just want to shake it up a bit.
