Off-Duty Weekend Style: Band Tees & Plaid Overshirts

MODERN GRUNGE STYLE

A 90’s lifestyle centered around building connections through television and music. N’SYNC songs were on automatic replay and JC Chasez’s face was plastered on my bedroom wall. Does anyone remember portable CD players or MP3’s? Comment below if you had one. Not only did musicians play a huge role in the decade’s aura but the items in our closets sealed the deal to a hypnotizing 90’s aesthetic.

Being a 90’s kid, fashion greeted me with over-sized plaid shirts, baggy jeans, cropped tops, vintage floral dresses, combat boots, high-top kicks, and gold or silver hoop earrings worn with rugged band tees. Til this day, I can’t tear myself away from the t-shirt and jeans style, it’s embedded in my system, so I’m always constantly trying to refresh this nostalgic look.

How I Style My Band Tees?

Re-developing the Grunge Style for Modern Fashion

Grunge style doesn’t have to be complicated. The beauty about 90’s fashion was to make the most of what you had in your closets. No one was set on buying the latest piece in magazines, style was all about wearing your oldest clothes in flattering ways for that classic ‘I don’t care’ street style edge. Today, we continue to see the grungy urban rockstar essence in our faces through characters such as Jughead from Riverdale or music bands like 5SOS.

One of my favorite ways to conveniently embrace the grunge trend is through my extensive collection of oversized t-shirts. When the weekend arrives, I’m constantly branded by lounging in my favorite music band merch. Personally, the more worn, the better. I like my tees super rugged, faded to an ashy-black with the design cracked from over washing because it adds character to my outfit. Typically my shirts are black, so I like to pair them with patterned items such as plaid or camouflage shirts to make my outfit naturally pop. As for my bottom piece, ripped/high-waisted/mom/black jeans easily compliments all my urban rock looks.

Accessories I Add to My Grunge Outfits

  • Messy hairstyles like a high puff, Afro or bun
  • Chains
  • Mini Backpack or Crossbody Bag
  • Converse Sneakers
  • Midi Rings
  • Chokers
  • Hoops/Stud Earrings/Ear Cuffs
  • Layered Necklaces
  • Fedora Hats
  • Studded ankle boots
  • Belts
  • Painted Fingernails

Off-duty style can be contemporary fashion like the celebrities, glamorous athleisure wear, lounge attire, or even your silk pjs in public. Next time you strut the streets on a Saturday afternoon, try a grungy style for that freestyle look that produces a nonchalant fashion aesthetic.
