Is the Mini Bag Trend Impractical or Fashionably Convenient?

Who else remembers the runway show where models strutted the catwalk with a mini bag so small only a AA battery could fit inside? The first time I seen the microscopic mini bag was during Paris Fashion Week F/W 2019. Seriously, the purse was literally the length of Chapstick! Or how about that time we saw the Triple Threat Musical Artist Lizzo carrying the tiny white Valentino purse on the AMAs 2019 red carpet?

It’s pretty obvious this bag isn’t meant to hold all the necessities for errand running such as car keys, wallet, sunglasses and hand sanitizer. This itty bitty bag featured on the runway was for creative expression. Runway shows tend to be an exaggerated version of ready-to-wear clothes. The catwalk is meant to display fashion through art and entertainment to catch a buyer’s attention while showing off the visionary design through clothes.

Designers know the bold looks may be unrealistic to some while others, mainly celebrities, are more comfortable to embrace the runway styles on red carpets. Nevertheless, brands do sell more modest toned-down versions of the looks so those who don’t want the extra glamour can comfortably and conveniently dabble in the trend.

However,  it had me wondering, is the concept of mini bags inconvenient or actually practical in real life? Throughout summer 2022, I’ve seen tons of mini bags released from various brands and many people carrying the shrunken style on Instagram.

Where did this trend originate? Well, mini bags first plastered our minds when French Fashion Designer Simon Porte Jacquemus launched the legendary microscopic Le Chiquito purse that stole the attention from the runway shows of Paris Fashion Week 2019.

JACQUEMUS’s signature Le Chiquito mini bag has attached itself to the shoulders and hands of many around the world, including celebrities like Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Beyoncé, along with Bella Hadid, Amra Olević Reyes and other fashion digital creators. So it’s no wonder why we see the luxury mini handbag in stock all the time. Featured in all shades of the rainbow, the bag is not the size you’ll need a magnifying glass to see like JACQUEMUS infamous tiny Le Chiquito.

The classic Le Chiquito is a mini bag about 4.7 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide, making it 12 x 9 in centimeters. It’s realistically bigger than the “TINY IT BAG” from the runway show, leaving room to fit credit card, phone, lipstick, travel size hand sanitizer and a car key. So it’s spacious enough to hold those essentials needed for running errands while maintaining your sanity and a sense of fashion.

Affordable Luxury Mini Handbags to Shop

The mini handbag trend has emerged itself into something many brands can’t take their hands off. Across the board you’ll see different companies selling their own mini handbag version such as the luxury $750 Jimmy Choo Bon Bon micro bag. Other high-end brands such as Celine, Bottega Veneta, Dior, Fendi and Gucci have mini bags that start at $1k.

Even INEXPENSIVE luxury brands are paving the way of style for any budget person who wants to look fashionable without busting the seams of their wallet. I compiled a list of top-quality mini handbags worth buying and don’t cost an arm or leg. Check out these affordable luxury brands to shop!

Who said a mini bag had to be tiny? If we want to get out the door and be successful we must find the right bag to minimally carry our needs. Looking to add elegance and texture to an ordinary outfit through accessories? JW PEI Mini Flap Crossbody is not only big enough to hold your daily goodies but the crocodile texture keeps you photo ready the moment you step out the door.

It has the perfect length of a shoulder drop strap that’s detachable incase you’re in the mood for clutch vibes. Here’s a fun fact, the bag is composed of vegan leather and recycled plastic bottles, making it eco-friendly.

Coming in hot with a shiny candied coat of color in vegan leather and faux suede lining, the Mini Ava Bag by Sinbono is a must-have. Just shy of 6 inches in width and height, this little baby is the pure example of a micro bag that carries expensive but costs less than $80. Obviously this cutie is perfect for summer with it not overwhelming your shoulders for those days at the board walk or amusement parks but personally, I think the bag would look phenomenal against a vibrant trench coat, studded biker jacket, or faux fur sweater in the colder seasons too.

On the hunt for a miniature handbag more on the small traditional side instead of the little IT BAG concept? The Pillow Tabby Shoulder Bag by Coach is not just plush in stature but a purse that’s a reinvented version of Coach’s classic 1970s design. Made of very soft leather and featuring the hanging hardware with the branded C logo makes this miniature bag one to snag. It’s the universal one you comfortably take to work, Target, the mall, cocktail party and out to brunch with the gals.

Skip the clutch and top handle for this unique micro saddle bag that will brighten and sass up any wardrobe. The Charles & Keith Micro Gabine Bag delivers impeccable taste with its gold chain link handle that gracefully drapes parallel the signature metallic buckle. Coming in about 3.9 (in) W x 3.5 (in) H, this delightful micro essential will not overwhelm even the busiest outfit. While it not only compliments the t-shirt and jean style, feel free to wear it with your workwear attire because it’s that casual yet sophisticated!

When Autumn arrives, how nice would it be to tour pumpkin patches and arboretums with this bag attached to your hip? Scarleton’s Lightweight Quilted Crossbody is painted in the classic go-to color for fall fashion. Along with this pretty firebrick red shade, the gold-tone hardware along the strap adds a touch of elegance making this bag appear more expensive when it’s priced under $40 bucks! If the shade is too daring for you or you’re more of a neutral gal, get your hands on the sophisticated white shade instead. I like this bag because it’s a modern take on the small pouch style coin purse popularized in the 50s and 60s. Isn’t it fun to see recycled styles into something new?!

Classy, elegant and sassy all in one makes up all the words to describe this Ted Baker mini bag. With the oversized knot bow embellishment as a handle, this bag is for sure to jazz up a boring off-duty outfit but carry itself well into evening attire. How cute would this be to a holiday office party with a sequin dress? Or what about date night with your mate? The Niyah Knot Mini Handbag is definitely a conversation starter over spinach dip, pita bread and Chardonnay!

Guess what? Nah, I didn’t have anything to say, just wanted to use the GUESS punchline. But now that I have your attention, I GUESS I should tell you about why the Katey Mini Satchel needs to take space in your closet. Aside from the fact it’s covered in faux-crocodile with a front logo detail, the mini satchel is perfect for someone who wants a small bag that carries big. This won’t take up space on your hip and in your closet yet it allows extra room for you to store goodies like your compact mirror, full wallet, sunglasses and some M&Ms without compromising your sanity.

Mini bags are making a comeback in 2022 and will carry out in the next year. Honestly I believe mini bags won’t ever go out of style because it’s a fun way to minimize and zone in on the things you truly need. Though the original microscopic bag is itty bitty, the mini bag concept is actually doable. Hopefully my list is helpful to those looking to enjoying this couture runway trend and buy a luxury top-quality mini bag without spending hundreds of dollars.
