What Does it Really Mean to Make a Fashion Statement?

BECOME A STANDOUT

Sequins, platform sneakers, giraffe print and purple faux fur take ordinary outfits to the next level while captivating glances from unknown eyes. By several definitions, wearing new or different styled clothes that draw attention from others is a fashion statement. As the industry encourages, star-studded style is provoked by making bold trendy looks collected with the most famous designers.

Following the ‘rules’ of fashion, magazines typically celebrate the style of those dressed in Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Balmain, Saint Laurent, Moschino or any other designer that’ll have you emotionally dripping in gold. Anytime you look through Vogue or PORTER magazines the term ‘fashion statement’ is always in reference to a high-end designer or brand.

Ready-to-wear runway garments, slogan tees and vibrant patterns are easy ways to create bold style but doesn’t Miss Plain Jane make fashion statements simply because she opposed to wearing flashy clothes and opts for the bargain-outdated pieces?

If Plain Jane isn’t dressed in the finest collections of Diane von Furstenberg, Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo, Max Mara or Valentino, does this mean she can’t make a fashion statement in Oh Polly, Topshop, SheIn, H&M or Target?

Define You: What is Personal Style?

If everyone is wearing colorful couture suits, cowboy vests and plimsolls you would be making a statement but it’s not necessarily your own. Wearing what’s ‘hot’ right now puts you in the trend category. Nothing wrong with following a trend, especially if that’s your choice. You always do what you want because personal style is derived by confidence and self choice.

Following a trend to make a style point isn’t really your own, it’s kinda like being with the ‘in crowd’, which isn’t a bad thing but if you want to shine bright in the spotlight, you have to take that risk and do the opposite of everyone else.

Pin Me!

In my opinion making a fashion statement is doing the opposite of everyone else or bringing something super original to the streets. While it’s proper to follow trends, I believe iconic style is finished with the touch of what makes it you.

Embrace the unknown and originality.

Want to know how celebrities like Zendaya, Gigi Hadid, Danielle Brooks, Hailey Baldwin, Tess Holiday, Iskra or Solange become style icons of street style? They don’t dress for popularity, they dress based on mood, personality, confidence and the overall message they want to send to the world.

Street style is full of energetic style points. Completely complicated to duplicate those looks because the outfits are specifically created based on the person’s mood and/other personality.

Don’t be afraid to be YOU to the fullest extent.

Fashion statements shouldn’t be about wearing the flashiest item, most expensive cross-body bag or extreme colors. Creating a style moment comes in many forms, whether you simply wear monochrome pink, minimalist look, a combination of floral/animal print or a white t-shirt with straight-leg jeans, it should be done based on how you feel and not what everyone else is doing nor the name tag of your threads.

Don’t let what you see in magazines or on the red carpet dictate your style efforts. Everyone is capable of making a fashion statement in their own original way.

  1. I totally agree with your definition of a fashion statement and boy do I wish I could afford to dress in all of those names on a daily basis! I like to play it safe with my clothing most of the time, I must admit.

  3. I love this. Few people don’t usually dig my style because they’re not used to it, but I wear whatever I want based on my mood and it’s my Fashion statement- Street Simple with a little bit of Extra.

Perfect because it’s you! I always like wearing fun things that don’t match as well, like paisley and plaid because it’s so different from others and you’ll rarely see people wearing the same style 😂

  4. Firstly, I absolutely adore your writing style. You’re so talented! I think fashion is such a wonderful thing as its meaning is so different for everyone. Some people have no style but a plain shirt and jeans and some like to wear every print in one outfit. I think making a fashion statement can be whatever you want it to be personally, it might be groundbreaking but if you’re doing something different than what you normally would, I guess for yourself it IS a statement! My favourite kind of fashion is throwing a bit of everything together really but I do love gothic glam!

I love this Natonya! I always say “Never let the price tag define your style”. A fashion statement is exactly what it says… what YOU want your outfit of choice to say when others see it.

  9. Since I have shifted to fashion blogging, I have tried to be bolder in my style but I very often come back to the basics. For photos, I can be exuberant, but in real life, it is sometimes very hard to pull it off!

This was such an interesting piece to read, I definitely fall into the category of following the trend simply because once work and other commitments are done it leaves very little time for shopping. I would love to be more bold and unique in my style!

It’s true when you get busy you don’t have time to shop and be as detailed as you would like. Here is a trick, close your eyes and grab the something for your closet, wear and don’t think twice about it. More than likely you’re picking something different to wear 😂
